When Should Wedge Anchors be used?

Type of Base Material

Wedge anchors can only be used in solid concrete.  They cannot be used in brick, block, and mortar joints.  While natural base materials such as stone and granite may be solid, they are inconsistent and their holding values have not been tested.  The design of the wedge anchor is such that the holding values are created at one certain point.  The expansion clip requires solid contact with the base material and expands over a very short area.  Attempts at using the wedge anchor in materials other than concrete will result in problems that are described below:

  • The anchor will not be able to be set properly and will have no holding values.
  • Once inserted into the hole, it is not possible to remove the wedge anchor.
  • The wedge anchor will spin in the hole.

Concrete

Before drilling and installing a wedge anchor, the concrete must have had a minimum of 28 days to set properly. Therefore, do not install a wedge anchor into green concrete (the term describing concrete that is less than 28 days old). Installing a wedge anchor before the 28 days have passed will negatively affect the holding values.

Item Being Fastened

The item being attached affects the choice of fastener because of the variance in its thickness and weight. Also, a specific type of fastener with a certain diameter and embedment depth must be used when specified by an engineer.

  • If the wedge anchor will be inserted through a hole in the item being fastened, then the hole must be larger than the diameter of the wedge anchor being installed.  For example, a 1/4-inch wedge anchor requires a minimum of 5/16-inch diameter hole in the fixture.
  • The surface of the item being fastened must have space allowing for a nut and washer.
  • The length of the wedge anchor used is determined by the thickness of the material being fastened.  Each diameter of wedge anchor is manufactured with a minimum embedment and standard length. Some diameters of wedge anchors, such as the 1/4-inch, are only available in lengths up to 3”.

Location

The wedge anchor is the only mechanical expansion anchor used in different environments that are available in four types based on plating or the steel from which it is manufactured. It is very important to select the correct type of wedge anchor to ensure that it does not rust, which would result in deteriorating holding values.

Overcoming Equipment Challenges for Concrete Plant Owners and Operators

Operating and owning a concrete plant can be challenging most days. However, the challenges from stone, sand, and gravel on equipment for concrete production make your day even more difficult. There are two significant challenges that can impact your bottom line. They include the high cost of steel, and noise.https://durexproducts.com/company/blog-news-events/overcoming-equipment-challenges-for-concrete-plant-owners-and-operators/

8 Questions to Rightsize Equipment for Data Center Construction

Data center construction typically includes grading, trenching, and pouring concrete. Building construction and shoring needs should be on your list, as well as safety and compliance. Does the worksite have a utility connection, or will you need generators to power everything that supports construction, from offices and cafeterias to guard shacks and parking lots? Make a list of every task that’s part of your project and then determine the machinery and accessories you need to tackle each one.

2. How Large Is Your Workforce?

Cross-reference the tasks you need to complete with the projected start date and budget to rough out a schedule. Next, consider the amount of time and manpower available for each job to determine the machines you’ll need and what each must be capable of doing.

For example, smaller pieces of equipment may not be powerful enough for heavy digging or loading or as efficient as larger machines when moving massive volumes of material. But the workforce available also makes a difference in how quickly you can finish a job.https://www.forconstructionpros.com/rental/article/22917790/sunbelt-rentals-8-questions-to-rightsize-equipment-for-data-center-construction

HydroGraph Clean Power, a commercial processor of nanomaterials, and Arizona State University School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment researchers outline the role of high purity (> 99 percent carbon) graphene to elevate concrete performance in an ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering journal report. Measured against portland cement paste control specimens, HydroGraph fractal graphene aggregate (FGA-1) and reactive graphene (RGA-1) dosed at 0.04 percent helped a) increase early compressive strength by 70 percent and 28-day strength by 15 percent; b) reduce total porosity and critical pore size; and, c) more than double yield stress. The agents’ potential to function as supplementary cementitious materials indicates a prospective reduction in embodied carbon by 10-15 percent compared to portland cement concrete.

Rise of the Machines

Robots and automated tools are already transforming construction sites. Automated masonry tools can dramatically increase the speed of construction—one prototype robot can lay 1,000 bricks per hour, for instance, while reducing the need for human workers to haul heavy pallets of brick or mortar around worksites. Autonomous vehicles and “driverless dozers” are also starting to break through, promising to allow heavy equipment to complete risky tasks while keeping humans safely out of harm’s way.

Other technologies are already widely utilized: drones, for instance, are used on at least 37% of construction sites, and they can significantly reduce the need for human workers to climb to high areas for inspections. With falls from dangerous heights accounting for more than a third of fatal construction accidents, that’s a big deal. There’s also the potential for drone-mounted sensors to help detect heat signatures to prevent fires as well as dangerous equipment malfunctions, and in commercial spaces, robots are being used to detect slip-and-fall hazards.  We need to make similar automated preventative measures ubiquitous on construction sites.

The benefits of such tools are obvious. Automating high-risk activities is a huge net win for construction workers, who will increasingly be able to work remotely on dangerous tasks. Many injuries—sometimes fatal—can be traced back to human error, and the human element is one factor an automated system, working with precision and consistency, can completely eliminate. As long as a robotic system is configured correctly, it won’t make mistakes—and if something does go wrong, it will be replaceable equipment, not human workers.

Don’t Take Safety for Granted

But it’s not all good news. Many construction workers say they find it distracting to work alongside drones, and there’s evidence that even when drones are operating at a considerable distance from humans they often lead workers to look away from their tasks. To use drones safely, we’ll need to manage their use and ensure they’re deployed in ways that coordinate with human workers and enable teams to operate safely and confidently across a range of worksite settings.

New technologies such as robot exoskeletons are also a mixed blessing: they can significantly reduce the wear-and-tear on human muscle and bone, making many workplace injuries less prevalent, but any technology that helps a single human lift 1,000 pounds brings potential dangers, too. These new capabilities bring new risks, and require proper training and new safety protocols to ensure their safe use.

It’s important to remember that worksite automation is also about increasing productivity. If a new tool or technology lets a worker complete a task single-handed, that’s great–but sometimes having fewer people working on a given task can make it easier for mistakes to go unnoticed. We’ll need proper planning and checklists, delivered and tracked seamlessly using digital tablets and other systems, to ensure that automation doesn’t increase the risk of potentially dangerous oversights.

A Safer Future for Construction Teams

The reality, then, is that robots will bring both potential benefits and new risks to construction worksites. To capture those benefits and manage those risks, we’ll need to be proactive about integrating new technologies into our worksites and our workflows in smart and responsible ways.

That will mean ensuring that we don’t simply patch together new technologies and expect them to work seamlessly and safely without any central oversight. In an era that will increasingly be defined by new construction technologies, we need to make sure that we have full visibility into the processes, equipment, and people across our worksites.

It might help to take a look at manufacturing, where industrial robots and automated systems are now par for the course. To keep track of factories, plant managers use “virtual twins” that digitally track every aspect of the equipment they’re using—from the rpm of a given motor, to the locations of specific workers or automated vehicles, to the temperature on the factory floor. That allows factories to operate more efficiently, but it also provides a layer of centralized oversight and communication that helps keep everyone safe.

If we are to be as successful with new technology as they are in the manufacturing sector, we’ll  need proper training and education for construction teams, who will increasingly have to be knowledge workers as well as manual laborers. Using robotic tools and working alongside automated equipment, work crews will need to be able to follow safety guidelines and processes for using sophisticated tools in real time. Making that process easy and seamless for human workers will be vital to ensuring that teams work safely and efficiently, while also overcoming any potential resistance they may have to using automated tools.

As we begin to introduce new automated and robotic technologies, we need to remember that construction worksites are complex places where humans and machines come together to get the job done. Using digital tools for education, training, worksite management, risk prediction and mitigation, asset tracking, communication, and related purposes will be essential as we strive to make construction sites the safest they can possibly be for their workers. https://www.forconstructionpros.com/business/construction-safety/article/22889016/planradar-robots-are-rewriting-the-rules-of-construction-safety

Is Rusty Rebar a Problem?

Q. Since steel expands when it rusts and destroys whatever is around it, why doesn’t the rebar used to reinforce concrete footings and foundations—which are in contact with ground water—rust and break the concrete into pieces?

A. Foster Lyons, an engineer and building-science consultant, responds: The short answer is, it does, but it happens so slowly and takes so long that it is insignificant to us. Properly placed rebar typically corrodes at a rate of about 1/10 micrometer per year across the thickness of the material. So, under normal conditions, a #5 bar (5/8-inch diameter) loses 2/10 micrometer from its diameter every year.

To determine if this is a problem, we have to understand the size of a micrometer. Also known as a micron and symbolized by the Greek letter µ, a micrometer is equal to one millionth (1/1,000,000) of a meter. By way of comparison, fine, thin hair is about 30µ in diameter and thick hair, about 130µ. A razor blade is about 0.4µ at its cutting edge, while a sharp knife blade is about 1µ; 5µ at the cutting edge is considered dull.

CONFAST Wedge Anchor

Concrete wedge anchors’ design allows them to anchor fixtures into concrete. Concrete wedge anchors work by inserting them into a hole drilled into concrete. The concrete wedge anchor is then expanded, wedging itself securely in the concrete. The length ID code and identifying marking are stamped on the head of every anchor.  The ANSI drill bit size for these anchors is equivalent to the diameter of the anchors themselves.
