Photo: New Tilt-Up Panel Construction Project In Orlando Florida

Some main advantages of tilt-up construction:

  • Can be more cost effective than cast-in walls
  • Quicker and safer to install
  • Reduces impact on the environment
  • Reduces amount of waste

Some disadvantages of tilt-up construction:

  • Not ideal for complex designs
  • Some worksite are not ideal for the method
  • Transportation to site increase cost
  • Handling/Installation of the panels can be challenging for inexperienced crews

Types of Stainless Corrosion
1. Uniform Attack – this type of general corrosion occurs when there is an overall breakdown of the passive film. The entire surface of the metal will show a sponge type of façade because halogens penetrate the passive film of stainless and allow for corrosion. Active halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine.
2.Crevice Corrosion – this type of corrosion with stainless fasteners in seawater environments due to the low PH of salt water. Chlorides pit the passivized surface in the area where low PH saltwater attacks the exposed metal. Lacking the oxygen to re-passivize, corrosion spreads. This corrosion is common in oxygen-deprived spaces, i.e. under a fastener head.
3. Pitting – similar to Galvanic Corrosion this type of corrosive action is the result of passivation in a small spot on stainless steel that becomes an anodic. The passivized part remains a cathode, and causes pit-type corrosion.

CONFAST 1/4″-20 x 2-1/4″ Male Hurricane Anchors install quicker and more efficiently than other storm protection anchoring products. For concrete and concrete block applications, drill pilot hole and drive the anchor in, it’s that easy. Predrilling is not required in wood base materials. Full thread engagement in concrete, concrete block and wood is required for best performance. Stucco-faced surfaces usually require countersinking so that the top of the hurricane anchors set flush to the stucco surface, allowing for full thread engagement in the base material All CONFAST hurricane anchor installations are required to be compliant with the shutter/panel manufacturer’s spacing, alignment and build-out requirements.

Preventing Fastener Corrosion – Part 1

Corrosion results in billions of dollars of lost income across the United States. Determining if a fastener will be attacked by corrosion can be a primary factor in achieving cost efficiency for long-term maintenance.

Fasteners will corrode and may lose some load carrying capacity if they are installed in corrosive areas or exposed to different types of corrosive materials. The areas and materials that can create a corrosive environment range from pressure treated wood (ACQ), salt water, ocean salt air, fertilizers, and exposure to two dissimilar metals and other elements that are corrosive. The Basics of Wedge Anchors to Secure Fixtures & Equipment to Concrete

Wedge anchors can be used in numerous applications such as windows and doors, signage, machinery and more, only if the base material is solid concrete. Unlike many other concrete fasteners, the wedge anchor cannot be used in brick or block.

The wedge anchor is simple to use and is available in a wide variety of diameters and lengths. Wedge anchors can be used for both light and heavy-duty applications.

CONFAST® Wedge Anchors

Concrete wedge anchors’ design allows them to anchor fixtures into concrete. Concrete wedge anchors work by inserting them into a hole drilled into concrete. The concrete wedge anchor is then expanded, wedging itself securely in the concrete.

USES

• CONFAST® wedge anchors are designed to be used in solid concrete.
• They should never be used in CMU block or brick base material.
• Available in a wide range of diameters ranging from 1/4″ to 1-1/4″. The anchor lengths, which depend on the diameter, are from 1-3/4″ to 12″.
